Mattawan Consolidated School District

Mattawan's 99d grant focused on fostering a culturally responsive and inclusive learning environment through comprehensive professional development and updating curricular resources. By partnering with The Center for Cultural Agility and  ThinkLaw, the intiative provided training to district leadership, teachers, and staff on topics such as implicit bias, cultural agility, and culturally responsive critical thinking strategies. Social studies teachers also engaged with Michigan Department of Education modules and received dedicated funding to diversify their classroom libraries and instructional materials with more representative books and art. Driven by their strategic mission to support all students, the project included a sustainability plan that used monthly mini-lessons and an evaluation framework from the Education Justice Assessment and Transformation Tool (EJATT). Mattawan also developed a planned strategy to incorporate regular student assessments to measure growth and proficiency in diverse histories.
