Mattawan Consolidated School District

This project focused on fostering a culturally responsive and inclusive learning environment through comprehensive professional development and updated curricular resources. Partnering with The Center for Cultural Agility and  ThinkLaw, the district provided training to district leadership and staff on topics such as implicit bias, cultural agility, and culturally responsive critical thinking strategies. Social studies teachers also engaged with Michigan Department of Education modules and received dedicated funding to diversify their classroom libraries and instructional materials with more representative books and art. Driven by a strategic mission to support all students—specifically addressing wellness gaps identified in student surveys—the project included a sustainability plan using monthly mini-lessons and an evaluation framework that utilizes the Education Justice Assessment and Transformation Tool (EJATT) and regular student assessments to measure growth and proficiency in diverse histories.
