Drilling grain was superior to hand sowing because it distributed seed uniformly at a controlled depth and covered it properly. Less seed per acre was used, but higher yields resulted. The disk-type opener easily cut through field debris, allowing for larger, more effective drills.

Red pine seedlings were grown at the West Ottawa Soil Conservation District's nursery in West Olive, Michigan and planted throughout Ottawa County to hold soil in place. Clarence Reenders helped to found the district in 1938 and supported its work in decades to come.
