Conservation and Community

 

In response to such crises, agronomist Hugh Bennett founded the Soil Conservation Service, emphasizing locally led conservation with minimal federal funding to ensure sustainable, community-driven solutions.

By 1938, Ottawa County farmers established a conservation district and a beach grass nursery to combat worsening environmental issues.

The conservation district was not a total solution, only one of a variety of efforts to remake Ottawa County's agricultural community. It required the efforts of community members, farmers, local officials, and outside assistance from experts to arrest the issues facing the community. 

From planting trees on Dewey Hill in April, 1941, to new agricultural methods, to community based organizations to invest in drains a broad-based effort was required, one that lasts into the present day.
